Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific calls made by the official, following the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
