Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
