An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese-made cars, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing secret matters in all vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made cars.
He stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that safety is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader security situation underscores the significance of robust measures and caution in every aspects of government operations, from vehicle use to communication habits.
