From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.

Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater transparency.

“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.

A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure

However, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.

But some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the attack.

“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement

Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.

Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to pass a law mandating the documents' publication.

Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
