Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
