The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of his move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
