Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism made him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
