A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
